DWIM — Trying to make the computer Do What I Mean

Making a LaTeX file compilable with any engine

In my tests, it seems that this piece of (La)TeX code will allow your document to work with pdfTex, XeTeX and LuaTex. With this, all you have to do is write your document in UTF-8 and off you go

\usepackage{ifxetex}
\usepackage{ifluatex}
\ifxetex
  \usepackage{fontspec,xunicode}
  \catcode`=13
  \defß{\ss}
\else\ifluatex
  \usepackage{fontspec,xunicode}
\else
  \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\fi\fi
